Sustainability Elements in Kai Yip Recreation Centre, Hong Kong

As concerns over health implications due to the presence of carcinogenic elements caused by prolonged exposure to SBR granules grows worldwide, an increasing number of sports and recreation facilities worldwide are beginning to endorse the usage of EPDM infills over the more traditional SBR granules. In this project, EDPM granules were therefore chosen as one of the main flooring materials for outdoor area and running track because of the non-hazardous nature, considering the extensive spectrum of the user groups. In terms of the eye-catching columns and texts, environmentally friendly external paint with low VOC was specifically selected. The basketball net has been replaced with more durable ones to enhance durability and reduce waste.

Gaw Capital Partners has put a basketball-net-shaped recycling bin to encourage the residents to recycle plastic bottles. More than 3,000 of plastic bottles are received monthly to help reduce waste in Hong Kong. Gaw Capital Partners also partners with a local NGO, Greeners’ Action, to facilitate the waste recycling.
